As the sun sets low and the dark months loom closer, the harvest is brought in, the cattle rounded up and the last preparations made to last the winter. Every morning is wrapped in fog, the leaves in the woods rustle underfoot, the evenings are dark and cold. As the natural world is going to sleep, a veil is lifted for one night between this world and the other, letting shadows in and allowing them to go back. The old folks know that night is a time of remembrance and communion with those who came before, and leave the doors open with a little offering of food by the fireplace. They call it "Samhain", and it marks the threshold between the old year and the new year. As the red sun sets in the mist, muffled hooves, neighing and barks can be heard, and a calvacade emerges from the edge of the woods, led by a dark silhouette on horseback wearing huge antlers. By his side, red-eared hounds run fast, chasing their prey. He is followed my more horses, the pale riders barely visible in the fog, until their uncertain forms blend in and disappear. It was Arwn, King of Annwn, the kingdone of the otherworld, and his retinue, going after the Twrch Twyrch, the enchanted board that leads their endless ride all through the Celtic lands.
